By defeating German mother-of-two Tatjana Maria in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, Tunisian third seed Ons Jabeur—the first Arab and African woman to reach a Grand Slam singles final—became the first of those two continents.

Jabeur defeated 103rd-ranked Maria, who sought to become the lowest-ranked woman to advance to the final, 6-2 3-6 6-1.

Although they are close friends, they were rivals on Centre Court. At the net, they shared a heartfelt embrace.
