Mondli Khumalo: After the attack, a cricketer was reunited with his family.

As he recovers from an attack that first put him in a coma, a young cricketer has been reunited with his family.

Mondli Khumalo was assaulted at 03:00 BST on May 29 near the Green Dragon pub in Friarn Street, Bridgwater.

He's had three brain procedures and is progressing "phenomenally," according to a buddy and teammate Lloyd Irish.

Sbonjile and Sakhelephi Khumalo, Mr. Khumalo's mother and uncle, arrived from South Africa on Wednesday and are sitting by his bedside.

The 20-year-old has played for North Petherton Cricket Club as an overseas professional and has represented South Africa under-19s.

The little bowler's condition has improved since he awoke from his coma, and he can now walk around the ward at Southmead Hospital in Bristol, as well as catch a sponge ball, which startled the nurses care for him, according to Mr. Irish.

He described the progress as "phenomenal."

"The catching, the hand-eye coordination - to already have it back is incredible."

"We were in complete disbelief, as did the nurses; one of them commented, 'In 25 years of working here, I've never seen anything like this,'" he continued.

Mr. Khumalo's family was able to fly over from South Africa to assist him thanks to crowdfunding which generated nearly £25,000 for him.

"To be honest with you, seeing everyone at home crying has been a difficult period for the family," said his uncle, Sakhelephi Khumalo.

"It took us a week to get into the habit of eating something." We were shocked, but now that we see him in this state, we are quite proud of him.

A 27-year-old male was arrested and released under investigation on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm.
