Nana Addo — There is no legislation that criminalizes LGBTQ+ people in Ghana

According to Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, there is no legislation in Ghana that criminalizes people who identify as LGBTQ+.

The legalization of the LGBTQ+ bill, which is presently before Parliament, is one of the contentious issues in Ghana. Almost every Ghanaian has opposed the bill's passage into law.

When US Vice President Kamala Harris questioned him at the Jubilee House on Monday, March 27, 2023, about the LGBTQI bill that is presently before Parliament but has not yet been passed by the lawmakers.

"The statement that there is legislation in Ghana to that effect is not accurate," he said, adding that it hasn't been passed.

"Parliament is dealing with it, and I will enter at the conclusion of the process."

Many Ghnanais believe that the president will approve the measure to be passed into law because of the financial assistance the US will be providing to the nation, which has caused them to be concerned about the current discussions.
