SA opposition wants ministers' lavish homes probed

According to South Africa's largest opposition party, inflated contracts for maintaining ministers' opulent houses are being investigated by the anti-corruption commission.

SA opposition wants ministers' lavish homes probed

This comes after the ANC administration disclosed that it had shelled out about $5 million (£4 million) to maintain dozens of houses used by public employees between 2019 and 2022.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is under more pressure now as a result of the incident.

Ramaphosa was elected on a platform of fighting corruption after his predecessor Jacob Zuma's time was tarnished by political and financial scandals.

The opposition Democratic Alliance adds some South African flavor to an old joke by stating that "at least we finally can answer the question of how much money it takes for ANC cadres to replace a lightbulb."

It claims blatant corruption and that the bill for bulbs at one minister's residence in Pretoria was close to $1,000.

Additionally, while much of the country was experiencing South Africa's worst power outages, $2.5 million was spent on generators in ministers' residences, and $70,000 was spent remodeling their kitchens.

The world's most unequal nation already exists there. The gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" can be getting bigger due to corruption.
