Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honorable Alban Sumana Bagbin has directed the committee on Defence and Interior to as a matter of urgency liaise with the Islamic Senior High school, the police service, and hospitals where the students were admitted for health care to get first-hand information regarding the firing of tear gas to disperse some students who were demonstrating and report back to the house.

The Speaker's directive follows a statement made in the House by the MP for Asawase, Honourable Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka-Mubarak for Parliament to expedite action on how to forestall the reoccurrence of police firing live ammunition into unarmed students, some of whom he claimed were just below 13 years.

He empathize with the injured students some of whom he noted were traumatized. He said for some time now, the school's frontage has been witnessing accidents as a result of overspeeding with the government turning death ears to the appearance of speed ramps.

He recounted that on Friday,10 June 2022 one of the teachers of the school was driving out of the school and an overspeeding vehicle run into her. She was rushed to the Okonfo Anokye Teaching hospital.

Unfortunately, on Monday, June 6, 2022, there was a rumor that the teacher, Madam Francisca had passed on, a rumor which sparked anxiety and uncertainty amongst the student body who amassed at the entrance demonstrating for speed ramps to be directed at the frontage of the school.

He said the students were later sent into their dormitories. Minutes later, he revealed that armed police arrived at the frontage of the school and started firing tear gas and live ammunition into the rampaging students leaving many injured.

The injured students were since rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Though, a number of the injured students were treated and discharged some others were yet to be discharged.

Based on the above, the Asawase lawmaker called on the House to fashion out measures in dealing with the unfortunate occurrences of security personnel shooting into unarmed civilians.

Given that, the Speaker, Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has directed that the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament should liaise with the family of affected students, police, and other stakeholders to ensure that the right thing was done and on time and report back to Parliament.
