Africa facing growing animal-to-human disease risk - WHO

The risk of disease outbreaks that move from animals to people in Africa is rising, the World Health Organization warns.

According to the report, these zoonotic epidemics have grown by more than 60% over the past ten years, with a significant uptick since 2019.

The Ebola virus, various viral hemorrhagic illnesses, dengue fever, anthrax, and monkeypox have been involved in the majority of cases.

Africa's Regional Director for the WHO, Matshidiso Moeti, urged action immediately to prevent the continent from becoming a hub for newly developing infectious illnesses.

According to the WHO, the rapid population growth, growing demand for animal-based foods, and the encroachment on wildlife habitats are some of the factors contributing to the development of these illnesses.
