Before releasing George Boateng, Aston Villa demanded compensation - Henry Asante Twum

The Ghana Football Association's (GFA) communications director, Henry Asante Twum, has stated that Aston Villa wanted compensation for George Boateng's departure from the Black Stars assistant coaching job.

The Villa U-23 coach was named to the technical team for the FIFA World Cup playoff games against Nigeria in March, alongside Otto Addo and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, while Chris Hughton, the former Norwich City, and Brighton & Hove Albion manager, was named to the technical advisory role for the Black Stars.

Villa urged the Ghana FA to pay compensation for Boateng's service, Asante Twum stated.

"Could you imagine that when we contacted Aston Villa for George Boateng's services for the Nigeria game, they demanded compensation," he stated.

"They claimed that they produced him and that if we require Boateng's services, the FA must be willing to compensate us." We continued to engage them until Boateng was cleared to play in the games."

Ghana remains without a head coach after securing qualifying for the tournament in Qatar, but the latest rumors from the Ghana FA suggest Otto Addo will be retained as the coach for the next 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as well as the 2022 World Cup.
