After receiving 98.9% of all valid votes in the party's primary elections held on Saturday, the former president was proclaimed the victor on Sunday.

He won by a wide margin against his primary rival, Kojo Bonsu, a former mayor of Kumasi.

Dr. Kwabena Dufour, a third candidate, withdrew from the campaign after claiming there were errors on the electoral roll.

Following his triumph, Mr. Mahama made an appeal for party cohesion in a Facebook post.

The former president, who lost the 2016 presidential election to incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose two-term term ends next year, would be making a comeback attempt for the third time.

After the death of former president John Evans Atta Mills while in office, former president Mahama, an accomplished politician, took over as president.

He eventually won the 2012 elections and was in office for four years.
