Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the win against West Ham United in the fifth round of the fa Cup at Old Trafford on Tuesday night was necessary after Everton’s frustrating 3-3 draw on the grounds last Saturday.

The Red Devils were dominant against David Moyes Hammers after Fabianski denied the hosts two goal saves in normal time. It took a Scott McTominay’s extra-time goal to sail them through to the quarter-final of the competition and according to the manager, the win “refocused and reset the side.”

“It doesn’t really matter, it's by hook or by crook maybe, and that’s the main thing in the cup,” he said.

“We’re in the hat and we bounce back after the disappointment against Everton. That last goal [by Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the weekend] could be a mental kick in the face and we’ve refocused and reset the heads and done really well.”

Results have started going the way of the manager following their second position on the Premier League table and still tipped as one of the favourites to win the Cup.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played Liverpool at Old Trafford before accommodating West Ham also, two games they triumphed to get closer to the trophy.

When asked in his post-match interviews with MUTV whether he is expecting another home tie, he said, “It doesn’t matter at the moment with the fans. With the travelling, of course, it’s easier to be here at Old Trafford so yes, please.

“Of course you want to win every game. We want to challenge and we want to go to the final. That's what we're here at Manchester United for. Sometimes you're lucky withdraws in the cup - we haven't been that lucky - but obviously, we move another step closer to the final. We got a few days to prepare. We don’t play until Sunday.

"Those 120 minutes will stand us in good stead, ready for Sunday."
