Outbreak Of Cholera, Typhoid And Other Diseases Loom As Company Continues To Dump Waste At Awutu Loye Against Court Order

Residents of Awutu Loye in the Awutu Senya West District of the central region have expressed fear over a possible outbreak of cholera, typhoid and other diseases as a result of improper dumping of waste in the community by some private waste management services. Members of the community are completely nonplussed by an utmost disregard to a court order restraining these companies from dumping waste in the community.

Flies hover around the entire community threatening the wholesomeness of food. For the newly developing area of the community known as Dubai City, plastic wastes are scattered within the entire area by blowing wind.

The effects of activities of these private waste management services are glaring.

Even though residents have expressed concern over the development, proceeded to court and secured a court order from the Winneba High Court against Honest Waste Services, supposed owners of the landfill site, restraining them from further dumping of refuse at the site, the activities continue unabated.

The company is exhibiting a total disregard of the injunction order of the court as their trucks continue to dump at the site even though notices of the court order are boldly displayed.

To smoothly operate by preventing members of the community from confronting drivers of the trucks, the company has placed thugs around the landfill site.

Under the guise of scavenging scraps, they threaten and restrain anybody from entering the site as an attempt by this reporter to capture the situation was thwarted by some wild and aggressive persons at the site.

Bewildered by this development, the chief and residents of Loye are calling for the government’s intervention.

Nana James Bortey is chief of Awutu Loye. Brooding over the matter, he called on authorities to urgently intervene to avert any possible outbreak of diseases in the future.

He speaks in with soireenews during investigation towards their environmental situation.

For nearly two decades, Mikleb Farms, a mechanised Agric venture has operated at Loye.

Operated by a retired Agric officer, the company has invested hugely in mango, coconut and vegetable plantations as well as livestock and poultry.

It also serves as a practical field for almost 400 students of agricultural engineering from the KNUST yearly and a source of employment for over 100 people.

Sadly, the future of this huge investment is not secured as the company has halted production and export of fruits and vegetables as a result of leaching caused by the contamination of the company’s dam which serves as an irrigation source.

Its greenhouse farming systems lie idle and wasting away.

The sale of fishes and livestock have also been halted.

Mr Joseph Kwasi Boamah is CEO of Mikleb Farms, he attributes the contamination of the dam to the activities of Honest Waste Services.

He said burnt fossils of plastic wastes from the landfill site are washed into the dam causing heavy pollution.

According to him, the company is recording huge losses.

He is appealing to the government to step in and ensure orderliness.
