Ghanaian musician, Kofi Kinaata, has declared that he will never sing a song in the English language.

The Fante singer and songwriter debunked rumors that he does not speak better English. He explained that he does not need to sing in another man's language to be successful in his own country.

He sighted the example of the legendary Michael Jackson, as he pointed it out to Abeiku Santana in an interview on Okay FM that Michael Jackson never sang in the Fante language, he only did songs in his own native English language and was more successful than most.

” Why should I bother myself singing in a language that is not mine? Did Michael Jackson ever sing in Fante? Over my dead body will I sing in English ” he told Abeiku.

His decision to stick to his roots, however admirable, has more disadvantages than it does advantages. Singing in his local language will win him the hearts of individuals who stay true to their roots. As in the case of the legendary Abedi Pele, who namechecked Kofi Kinaata as his best artiste.

But, not singing in English limits his market and brand-reach as he'll end up only being a local champion with no recognition on the world stage. This means that no matter the success he achieves locally he'll not be as prominent, nor as rich as his counterparts who have decided to sing in the English language.

Time, however, will tell.
