Up-and-coming gospel performers feel big too be mentored

Samuel Ashirifie, a rising star in the gospel genre, is advising aspiring gospel musicians not to be afraid to ask more experienced performers for advice.

He said that because they like to handle things independently, many of his coworkers are having difficulty and have not yet discovered a "reputable space."

Samuel stated that he has found his footing and is making progress thanks to the mentoring of seasoned gospel musician Amy Newman in an interview with Graphic Showbiz conducted on the fringes of this year's Harvest Praise on Easter Friday.

"As a novice, I have learned a lot from Auntie Amy Newman, who has been a wonderful mentor to me. Indeed, the primary responsibility of a gospel artist is to spread the gospel, but it's also important to note that there are other factors that contribute to your identity. "You need people who have been there before to mentor and mold your path if you're a fresh artist.

And for that reason, I'm advising young people like myself to get the right advice from people who have been there before," he stated. The topic of churches paying gospel performers has been a hot topic of discussion lately, with differing perspectives.

Samuel shared his own experience and clarified that gospel musicians want funding for music productions because they are also the ones who pay for them. "The churches primarily assert that we are doing work for God and that they are providing a platform for us to share our works with the public.

That makes perfect sense, yet I traveled from Takoradi to Accra to play at Harvest Praise. Therefore, given the expense of my transportation from Takoradi to Accra, I don't think it will be fair to me if a church in Accra extends an invitation for me to play at a program and all they say is "thank you."

Although I believe that the emphasis shouldn't be on money, there is nothing wrong with providing an honorarium. The bible even says that the labourer deserves wages so that’s the way it should go,” he added.
