African Union launches Covid vaccine passport

A new vaccine e-passport from the African Union will make it simpler to travel both inside and outside of Africa.

The passport will be available digitally. To demonstrate that one has received the full course of Covid-19 vaccinations and has a current vaccination certificate, a QR code will be scanned.

At the virtual Africa Integration Day, Boma of Africa event on Friday, the passport was unveiled.

The virtual document and the e-health backbone are parts of Africa's new health order, according to African heads of state and global health professionals present at the event.

Ahmed Ogwell, the acting director of the Africa CDC, claims that the vaccine passport will soon broaden its scope to cover more vaccinations including the yellow fever shot.

He added that the Africa CDC was also holding talks to link the passport to other global systems.
