Court slaps four with a 50 penalty units each for insanitary earth drain

An Ashaiman Circuit Court has fined four self-employed 50 penalty units each for allowing unsanitary earth drain with all sorts of refuse contrary to section 56 subsection (a) and (b) of Public Health Act 851/2012.

In the case of the Republic versus Stephen Ofosu, Joseph Dugbartey, Frank Okyere, and Dela Vivian, the court presided over by His Honour Richard Delali Anku convicted and sentenced the four to 50 penalty units amounting to GHS600.00 each or in default serve a prison term of 6 months on their guilty plea. Presenting the brief fact of the case to the court, the Prosecutor, Katey George said the accused persons are self-employed and living in Jericho, a suburb of Ashaiman.

He said on August 3, 2022, Environmental Health Officers in charge of the area embarked on Operation Clean Your Frontage and found that the earth drain used by the accused persons was filthy with plastic bottles, polythene rubbers, lorry tires, food debris, and human excreta.

The attention of the accused persons was drawn to the offense and was served with constructive notice. He noted that on August 5, 2022, a follow-up was made and the nuisance was still not abated so they were served with a summons to appear before this honorable court.
