The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakwa has expressed grave worry about soaring statistics of teenage pregnancies in the towns and villages within the constituency
The male legislator who doubles as the former Deputy Minister of Education has, however, warned unscrupulous men, particularly the okada riders and boat operators in the area taking advantage of these teenage girls to put an end to such barbaric attitudes and behaviors.
This, the MP noted would pave way for the girls to attain their dreams and aspirations.
Mr. Okudzeto-Ablakwa issued these warnings in an exclusive interview with Soireenews.com after he together with Old Vandals from the University of Ghana and over 100 girls from the Battor Senior School had a massive clean-up exercise at the Battor Catholic Hospital.
The MP issued a strong warning that"if any man is caught of having sexual intercourse with teenage girls, we will not be spared such perpetrator as well as not even allowing such matter to be settled at home."
The North Tongu District, despite efforts, is battling with incidences of teenage pregnancy, but the MP for the area has warned nobody will be shielded.
He further warned that warns, if you are a politician, chief, okada rider, a farmer, or father, nobody will be allowed to settle defilement matters amicably, not even me, pointing to himself.
"I need my girls in school to take up our hospitals, schools, and security agencies and others, I'm not happy with the rise in teenage pregnancy, if you engaged in one, I have asked the police commander to apply the laws strictly," the MP remarked.
The lawmaker called for the enactment of by-laws to curb the rising cases of teenage pregnancies in the North Tongu District area and the entire Volta Region
"As the MP of the area, l would make sure that we organize parents at the various palaces to educate them on how to monitor their teenagers to reduce teenage pregnancies. We should also institute measures such as bylaws to punish culprits.”
He called to call on parents, chiefs, civil society in general not to frown on teenage pregnancy and when the perpetrators are found, let the laws apply to the latter and we get them punished.
According to him, without an appropriate measure of punishment, this canker will continue to fester. And it’s not going to be in anyone’s interest, adding that "We at the political level, we will give our blessing to that resolution.
For his part, the President of the Volta Vandals Association, Mr. Edem Kofi Kpotosu called on Ghanaians especially the young ones to adopt volunteerism and be patriotic.
