Rita Offen

A 63-year-old Rita Offen, a student of Obuasi Independent JHS "A", sat for this year's BECE. The mother of five was the center of attraction when Obuasi East District Chief Executive Madam Faustina Ammisah toured exam centers in her district on November 17, 2021.

A wrinkled face Mrs.Rita Offen, clad in her  government school uniform popularly known as "tea and bread" with her spectacles, explained to the DCE what informed her choice of pursuing education at her age. She says she is a petty trader and was always cheated in trading; that compeled her to go to school.

Her decision was welcomed with ridicule when she started at primary 4 at age 58. But her perseverance and determination turned the mockery into encouragement.

“The most important thing for me in pursuing formal education was to be able to write and read my Bible and I can do that now" she said

She admonished her fellow women to pursue education irrespective of their age and also advised her female colleagues to focus on their education and not follow irrelevant things that will hinder their progress in life.

The DCE was obviously astound and heaped praises on the 63 year old, in her address to the media. She also had a piece of advice for the youth
