THE PARAMOUNT Queen Mother of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area in the Central Region, Obaatan Ama Eduwa I has filed a lawsuit against the Paramount Chief, Obirifo Ahunaku Ahor Ankobea II, over a dispute regarding the traditional capital.
In a statement of claim filed at the High Court of Justice in Kasoa, Obaatan Ama Eduwa I alleges that the chief has unilaterally attempted to change the traditional capital from Gomoa Assin to Gomoa Buduattah without proper consultation with the kingmakers and principal elders of the Nsona Royal Family.
The lawsuit seeks an order of perpetual injunction to prevent the chief from making any such changes without the consent of the traditional council. Additionally, it requests an injunction to prevent the chief from changing the name of the traditional area without proper consultation.
According to the statement of claim, the plaintiff argues that the proposed changes would violate established customs and traditions of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Area and could lead to a “customary and traditional catastrophe.”
Lawyer for the plaintiff, Robert Ishmael Aggrey-Fynn Amissah, emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity of traditional institutions and ensuring that major decisions are made in accordance with established procedures.
The lawsuit comes amidst tensions within the Gomoa Akyempim community, with various
chieftaincy disputes and land disputes exacerbating the situation.
The Paramount Queen Mother is seeking costs, including legal fees, and any other relief deemed fit by the court.
Efforts to reach the defendant’s legal team for comment were unsuccessful at the time of
publication.
The case has been scheduled for a hearing at the High Court in Kasoa, with both parties
expected to present their arguments before the court.
