The Association of Road Contractors of Ghana is boiling with anger at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the nonpayment of road funds.

According to the National Vice Chairman of the Association, Mr. Stephen Kweku Attatsi, the government of Ghana owes them about GH¢3.69 billion.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Soireenews.com on Saturday, February 13, 2021, Mr. Attatsi pointed out that the Association will continue to press the government’s neck to settle the debts to be paid to its members.

Mr. Attatsi who doubles as Chief Executive Officer (CEO)of Supreme Bird Investment Limited, revealed that President Nana Addo upon numerous promises has failed to deliver the allocated funds which have resulted in the untimely deaths of some road contractors in the country.

“We are now fed up with President Akufo-Addo's supplications because many of us have died due to these unpaid debts.”

It could be recollected that executive members of the Association of Road Contractors of Ghana including all the various Regional Ministers, Directors, and Key Players in the road sector met at the Ghana International Conference Centre on January 8, 2019. At the event Vice President, Dr. Alhaji Mahamadu Bawumia declared 2019 the Year of Roads, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Atta also declared 2019 and 2020 as the year of roads.

Interestingly, the sector Minister disclosed that the government would release money in February 2019 to pay all the road contractors.

However, “till today, the funds remain unsettled the Association of Road Contractors of Ghana has stipulated.

A report by the parliamentary committee on roads and transport has indicated that government still owes road contractors more than GH¢ 3.69 billion for projects financed from the consolidated and roads fund.

Although the government has paid over GH¢2.2 billion of arrears consequently, the delay in settling the outstanding debt is affecting the construction industry, the association has hinted.
