The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi has made known that the quest to create a serene marketing environment at Dr. Mensah and Central Market has been achievable with the help of the Police and the various market stakeholders

He spoke that regardless of the complaints by market women, the KMA will make sure that the social distancing directive; a measure to help curb the COVID-19 pandemic is enforced to prevent further threats.

 

 

“The security men are diverting some of the people through different routes to avoid congesting amidst the criticisms but we have no option than to embark on what is best in the Metropolis in such a challenging time.

“We want to achieve the social distance directive hence the hardship,” he added.

The sharing of cards was successfully effected by KMA to help market women trade in groups after flouting on the social distancing order effected by the president.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Security Council (METSEC) chaired by the KMA Mayor, Hon. Osei Assibey Antwi on Monday, April 6, 2020, closed down the Central Market to enable the leadership to reorganize their members into groups to trade in turns.

At a press conference in Kumasi on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the METSEC together with the market leadership decided on apportioning traders of Dr. Mensah and Central Marker into three to be identified with color cards; Red, Yellow and green.

The KMA mayor attested on Friday, April 10, 2020 that the decision has condensed crowding and brought about a composed environment for trading.

“The environment at the Afia Kobi Market is one of the perfect place so far and we really commend all those who made this possible.

“Everything is place,” he added.

 

 

The Bayerehemaa (Queen of Yam) of Central Market, Nana Yaa Foowaah advised that members that are violating on the new rules if caught would be denied from trading in the market.

She cautioned that the COVID-19 preventive measures are one ideal solution to help traders to stay safe therefore, the leaders of the market will make sure the directives by the Ghana Health Service, endorsed by the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo is firmly enforced.
