Contracta warns Kumasi street sellers to value their lives

Traders on the stretch of the Kejetia Central Market to Racecourse have occupied spaces meant for huge trucks thereby decongesting the road and making it difficult for construction vehicles to speed up transport of material.

The Consultant of CONTRACTA Constructions UK Limited, Mr Emmaunel Danso has warned traders to value their lives instead of obstructing the company’s activities with their business at unauthorized spaces in the capital of the Ashanti Region.

According to him, if traders out of ignorance suffer any physical damage as a result of being run out by any of their trucks, compensation could be paid but it cannot reverse the harm done hence his warning for them to stay away from areas meant to be free to speed up works.

CONTRACTA Constructions UK Limited in charge of the Central Market project has been met with a steam of human traffic around the Otumfuo roundabout through to Central Market main gate which considerably delays their work. Mr Emmaunel Danso in an interview with Soireenews said although they have alerted the City Authorities, that is the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, yet it is needful to notify traders to avoid imminent dangers and keep off from the site.

He explained that the indiscipline attitude of trotro drivers who prefer parking anywhere to load stalls their drivers negatively affects construction on the site for the sake of protecting lives.

“The human congestion at the roundabout is making our work tedious. Our bigger trucks could accidentally harm traders and it looks like the traders don’t care about any of it.

“Some of our drivers have complained that it takes them two hours to offload batching plants because of the indiscipline of trotro drivers and traders on the racecourse to Central Market stretch.

"We do not have the right to sack them from where they are selling. They are delaying the progress of the work due to where they sell and load.

“The city authorities must be on guard and control these women because should there be an accident, it could harm lots of lives and CONTRACTA’s name will be mentioned.”

He asserted that safety is a key priority of CONTRACTA among their working staff yet for the outside, they have no authority to drive sellers occupying the streets hence their request to KMA authorities and the Urban roads to, if possible, provide them with an alternative route to Central Market to aid them.

“Safety is our key as a company and within we are safe.,” he added.

“Our power to control is on the inside but the outside is up to the authorities. We have put own our complaints to the consultant, KMA and urban roads because the actions of marketers are really affecting our progress.

“We are pleading to hawkers by the road to be cautious. We want to let them know that should anything happen, they should not blame contracta.

The Consultant of CONTRACTA Constructions finally informed that should victims of any accident be paid huge compensation in case of a misfortune, it cannot recover the harm done to them, be it deformity or death therefore they are pleading to them to value their lives more than the money they are making for it is a way of risking it.

He also urged KMA to hasten in their pursuit to empty around the grounds where works are ongoing to speed the process.

“At the end of the day they will demand compensation but the harm would have been caused. They must value their lives and be protective. KMA should be in a hurry to evacuate them from the roadside because its affecting us. We have plans of fencing around the project to lessen the risk. It’s a suitable way to help us focus on the job we are doing.”
