Men have been advised to stay away from smoking and excessive alcohol intake to avoid oral cancer.

A dental technician and clinician with the Bono Regional Hospital, Donsob Tiero Joseph has said.

According to him, oral cancer is predominant in men above 40 than in women.

Oral cancer appears as a growth or sore in the mouth that does not go away.

Oral cancer, which includes cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat), can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early.

Joseph indicated that smokers are at about 50% risk of getting oral cancer whereas alcohol intake poses an 80-90% threat. He added that early detection is key in treatment and can be done by an expert since signs and symptoms do not show in most cases.

Oral cancer according to him can affect your immune system which can expose a person to other conditions and is treated the same way many other cancers are treated,  with surgery to remove the cancerous growth, followed by radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy (drug treatments) to destroy any remaining cancer cells.

He thus called on men to either stop or reduce smoking and alcohol intake.
