WASSCE: NAGRAT calls for Independent Investigation into Examination leaks

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is calling for an independent investigation into circumstances leading to the leakage of some papers, in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

NAGRAT wants all persons found culpable to face the law.

The National president NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, said punishing culprits behind examination leaks will bring an end to its incidence.

Several papers in the ongoing WASSCE including Economics, English have been leaked on social media with answers.

This leakage follows agitations by students who wanted to have questions to aid them in the examinations.

According to NAGRAT’s president, setting up an independent investigation body will be in the right direction to mitigating the issue.

“We think that an investigation should be instituted. An open investigation should be instituted and persons found culpable be dealt with. I think there should be an independent investigation body set up by the government.”

“This investigation should go beyond the West African Examination Council because the council has its integrity to protect. The Ghana Education Service will have its integrity to protect so they cannot set up any committee,” he added in an interview on Citi Breakfast show.

Mr. Carbonu further stressed that the integrity of the WASSCE certificate was at stake.

In related developments, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has also called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to investigate the WASSCE papers leaks.

According to NUGS in a statement, the leakage and its subsequent paper cancellation may have a psychological effect on the student.

NUGS described the examination leaks as unfortunate, adding that, it could negatively influence the students into embracing exams malpractice.

"The endless leaking of examination papers only trains our students to adopt unfair means of success in their educational and professional career, a situation that will only break the moral fibre of society and roll back the little gains we have made as a people.

"The National Union of Ghana Students is therefore once again calling on WAEC the GES and all other stakeholders to put in place measures to end the leakage of exam papers in the ongoing WASSCE examinations."
